The story
This is one of the two brothers from Straight At You, a few seconds after they reached us. He stopped, turned his head and looked straight into the lens. Nothing else happened. Nothing else needed to.
The morning light came in at an angle from above and set fire to the top of his mane while the background fell away into the dark. I did not have to do anything with that. The Serengeti did it itself.
In colour this frame comes off the screen at you. The gold in his eyes is exactly the gold in his mane, and that is the whole picture. A black and white version of the same second exists as well, and it says something completely different: The Price of the Crown. The same lion, two different things to look at.
