An animal that looks at you does something an animal looking away does not. You stop seeing a species and start seeing an individual. A look that holds you.

Getting close is only allowed when the animal allows it, and that is exactly what makes these frames worth having. None of them were forced. The animal let it happen.

It is also why a portrait works differently on your wall than a landscape does. Something is looking back.
