Map of an Elephant

Lake Manyara, Tanzania

The story

This is an elephant's belly. Nothing else. No ear, no eye, no outline, just a piece of hide filling the entire frame.

With elephants it pays to not photograph the whole animal. Zoom into the skin and something comes out that looks like nothing else. Folds, cracks, dry plates, lines running in every direction. It stops reading as an animal and starts reading as a map, something from another age that you could plot a route across.

Black and white settles it. Without colour there is no elephant left at all, only landscape.
