The Eye of Tarangire
Tarangire, Tanzania
Sometimes taking the colour away is what brings the story alive.
Colour tells you where you are. Take the colour away and what is left is what is happening.
Without it you suddenly see the shape of a head, the folds in a hide, the difference between light and shadow across a coat. Everything that was distracting is gone. What remains is the animal itself.
Sometimes black and white is decided beforehand, sometimes only afterwards. It is not about which version is prettier, but about which one tells the story best.
