Three Pairs of Eyes

There were two of them at first. That is what you see when you drive up, and it is what most people photograph before moving on. We stayed. Half an hour later the third came up onto the mound, and only then did the frame work.

They are brothers. Male cheetahs often stay together for life in a coalition, and three of them can take prey that none of them would manage alone. These three were working. From the termite mound, the only high ground for miles, they were scanning the plain.

The mound stood right beside the road, so getting close was not the hard part. The waiting was. Three heads looking the same way at the same moment is not something you get by asking for it.
