No Two Alike

The same self-drive day in Kruger as The Old Man. This is a giraffe's flank, close enough that the animal disappears and only the pattern is left.

That pattern is not decoration. Every giraffe carries its own arrangement of patches, as individual as a fingerprint, and it is passed from mother to calf. Two giraffes with identical markings do not exist. What you are looking at belongs to one specific animal and to no other.

This one stayed in colour while the elephant hide went to black and white. The reason is simple: in colour it is warm. Those browns and that cream do something grey tones would not, and the contrast is already built into the pattern. Black and white had nothing to add.
