Asleep on Stone

Ngorongoro, Tanzania

The story

Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano, and down on the crater floor you can still tell. In places the rock lies right out in the open: dark, hard volcanic stone in the middle of an otherwise green plain.

That is where she was lying, early in the morning, her head flat on the stone. The rest of the pride was further ahead, playing. She was not joining in. She was asleep.

That is what this frame is about, and it is why it sits in Textures. Two surfaces up against each other: warm, soft fur on cold, hard volcanic rock, both in the same low morning light. She did not shift once the whole time we were there.
